Building a deeper connection TO God using the very words OF God.
About TBQ
Benefits
Bible Quiz offers you a chance to travel all over the country! You get to stay in hotels, meet new friend and build lifelong relationships. While quizzing, you will learn how to work as a team with other youth from your church as you compete against other teams from all over!
Many quizzers have been awarded significant scholarship amounts due to their involvement in Teen Bible Quiz. Above all, you will learn God’s word and develop a deeper relationship with Him. Thirty minutes per day is all that’s required to get started. Try it this season. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish!
Competition
Quizzers compete in regularly scheduled meets (every 6 weeks or so) against teams from other churches. A quiz match consists of 20 questions with values of 10, 20, or 30 points each. In a quiz match, two teams of up to 3 quizzers (with up to 3 substitutes) each sit at the quizzing table. Using an electronic quiz box system, each quizzer has their own quiz pad so they can “beat others to the buzzer” and earn the right to answer the question. The team with the higher amount of points wins the match and the individual scores are recognized as well. Additionally, an element of debate is introduced where teams can “contest” (challenge) the correctness of their answer or the answer of the other team.
Geography
With many teams all over the state, locations for competition are spread out at different churches, which reduces travel time to meets. Wherever your church home is, it’ll be easy to make it to meets.
Championship Division
Youth in grades 6-12 study the entirety of the material in a given season.. Competition tends to be more fast-paced and competitive. These students generally travel more than those in other divisions and are eligible for greater amounts of scholarships. This division ends competition at the National level.
Contender Division
Youth in grades 6-12 typically only study half of the book(s) in a given quiz season.. These teams compete at a more relaxed pace over a lesser amount of material. Ideal for younger or first-year quizzers, Contender division ends competition at the Regional level..
XP5 Division
All you need is 5 minutes a day to study - that’s what the “5” in XP5 stands for. This is the perfect gateway into TBQ for individuals who have never heard of quizzing or just don’t have too much time in their day for studying. Competition is very relaxed and typically covers around one quarter of the book(s) of a TBQ season. The XP5 division ends at the District level.
FAQs
What division in right for my church?
The XP5 division is a great place to start for those new to quizzing in general as well as those who are coming up from Junior Bible Quiz who want to grow into understanding TBQ. It is no harder than JBQ, and helps introduce the differences between the two ministries. The XP stands for Experience, and the 5 stands for the five minutes of study per day your quizzers will need to excel. The material for XP5 is significantly less than the amount of Scripture the other divisions study. Each season features four or five quiz meets, which cover one or two chapters with roughly 30 to 40 verses overall. That’s a level that any quizzer can master with just five minutes per day. XP5 quizzing ends at District Finals.
CONTENDER division is best for quizzers who have excelled in JBQ or have competed previously in the XP5 Division. These quizzers will study roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the Scripture in a given season. This division is slightly more competitive than XP5 and introduces review questions from Meet 2 onward. CONTENDER quizzing ends at Regional Finals.
CHAMPIONSHIP division is a great level for those who have previously competed in CONTNEDER division. These quizzers typically study All of the Scripture in a given season. While the studying requires more time and the matches are a step up in competitiveness, the trade-off is that quizzers will have a lot more opportunity for travel and college scholarships. CHAMPIONSHIP quizzing ends at National Finals.
What are the questions in a match like?
A Bible Quiz match consists two teams competing by answering 20 questions in three point values. There are eight 10-point questions, nine 20-point questions, and three 30-point questions. In the XP5 level, 10 out of the 20 questions in each match come from the Contender Study Questions which can be purchased to use in practices. 2 more questions in each match come from the Application Questions. Application Questions are designed to go more in depth with the material and are used by all levels of Bible Quiz during the four League Meets. The other eight questions per match aren’t published beforehand. To answer these questions you will need to memorize the portion of the Scripture that is for that particular meet. This memorization of the Scripture is the focus of the whole ministry, and it’s also the key to competition. If your quizzers are able to memorize the entire portion being covered, they will essentially be quizzing from an open book.
Unlike all other levels of both Teen and Junior Bible Quiz, in XP5, there is no review of previous material as the season moves along. Once you have quizzed over the first meet’s material, you don’t cover that again for the rest of the season. The second meet has entirely new material, as does the third and fourth meets. Study time is spent on new material only.
XP5 matches have one other significant difference: the first 12 questions of each match are directed to only one team or the other on an alternating basis. Even if you have less experienced teens, they won’t have to go head-to-head against the other team at first. After 12 questions, the quizmaster calls a one-minute official time out for coaches to talk to their quizzers and then the two teams compete against each other, just like in Junior Bible Quiz.
While there is a competitive aspect to XP5 as there is in other Bible Quiz divisions, it’s mainly just a fun way to learn the Bible and transition to Teen Bible Quiz. Winning teams and individual quizzers are given awards at each meet, but at the end of the season there’s no playoffs — you’re done.
CHAMPIONSHIP and CONTENDER both contain 2 Applications questions per match. CONTENDER Division also contains 5-10 questions per match taken from the Contender Study Questions. All other questions will need by answered by quizzers recalling the verses they have studies and memorized.
What to I need to get started in TBQ?
1. Scripture portions of the material being studied. You can buy them for each quizzer and coach for $11 from MyHealthyChurch. (Acts Scripture portions can be purchased here.)
2. Question sets for practice. We recommend the Acts Digital Bundle as it contains all the official products Bible Quiz produces for League meets. They are purchased and downloaded on digitalMyHealthyChurch (a different site then where the Scripture portions are purchased from).
3. A buzzer box is helpful for practice to prepare your teens for the meets. If your church has Junior Bible Quiz, you can borrow one from them as we use the same style quiz boxes. Also there are places to buy quiz boxes which are listed on our resources page. If you are new to Bible Quiz and don’t have access to a quiz box, let us know as we have a few available to loan out.
4. Subscribe to the National Bible Quiz Newsletter to get updates from the National office, including any official changes to Scripture portions, rules, or questions.
